If you click \u201cYes,\u201d the pop-up will install the \u201cBing Search\u201d Chrome extension while making Microsoft\u2019s search engine the default.<\/p>\n

If you click \u201cYes\u201d on the ad to switch to Bing, a Chrome<\/a> pop-up will appear, asking you to confirm that you want to change the browser\u2019s default search engine. \u201cDid you mean to change your search provider?\u201d the pop-up asks. \u201cThe \u2018Microsoft Bing Search for Chrome\u2019 extension changed search to use bing.com,\u2019\u201d Chrome\u2019s warning states.<\/p>\n

Directly beneath that alert, seemingly in anticipation of Chrome\u2019s pop-up, another Windows notification warns, \u201cWait \u2014 don\u2019t change it back! If you do, you\u2019ll turn off Microsoft Bing Search for Chrome and lose access to Bing Al with GPT-4 and DALL-E 3. Select Keep it to stay with Microsoft Bing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Essentially, users are caught in a war of pop-ups between one company trying to pressure you into using its AI assistant<\/a> \/ search engine and another trying to keep you on its default (which you probably wanted if you installed Chrome in the first place). Big Tech\u2019s battles for AI and search supremacy are turning into obnoxious virtual shouting matches in front of users\u2019 eyeballs as they try to browse the web.<\/p>\n

There doesn\u2019t appear to be an easy way to prevent the ad from appearing.<\/p>\n

Microsoft reportedly confirmed the pop-up\u2019s authenticity in statements to Windows Latest<\/em> and The Verge<\/em>, cringingly painting the move as an opportunity for users. \u201cThis is a one-time notification giving people the choice to set Bing as their default search engine on Chrome,\u201d a company representative wrote. \u201cFor those who choose to set Bing as their default search engine on Chrome, when signed in with their MSA [Microsoft account] they also get more chat turns in Copilot and chat history.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a reminder of how friendly its intrusive ads supposedly are to user freedom, it added, \u201cWe value providing our customers with choice, so there is an option to dismiss the notification.\u201d Engadget emailed Microsoft for independent verification, but the company didn\u2019t immediately respond. We\u2019ll update this article if or when we hear back.<\/p>\n

Windows Latest<\/em> described the advertisement as coming from a \u201cserver-side update\u201d and said the ad wasn\u2019t part of a Windows update.
