In case you missed the hype, Humane is a startup founded by ex-Apple executives that's working on a device called the "Ai Pin" that uses projectors, cameras and AI tech to act as a sort of wearable AI assistant. Now, the company has unveiled the Ai Pin in full at a Paris fashion show (Humane x Coperni) as a way to show off the device's new form factor. "Supermodel Naomi Campbell is the first person outside of the company to wear the device in public, ahead of its full unveiling on November 9," Humane wrote.

The company describes the device as a "screenless, standalone device and software platform built from the ground up for AI." It's powered by an "advanced" Qualcomm Snapdragon platform and equipped with a mini-projector that takes the place of a smartphone screen, along with a camera and speaker. It can perform functions like AI-powered optical recognition, but is also supposedly "privacy-first" thanks to qualities like no wake word and thus no "always on" listening."

Humane first flaunted the capabilities of the Ai Pin at a Ted Talk back in May led by co-founder Imran Chaudhri, who previously worked on the iPhone user interface. Though the device itself was mostly hidden, he showed off a variety of sci-fi like features, including the ability to take a call while projecting details on his hand. He also flaunted its ability to translate English to French using AI translation, in Chaudhri's own voice. Another trick was "catch me up," a summary of news and information you may have missed.

Other information is less clear, like how the device connects to the internet, as it doesn't pair with a smartphone. And other than the fact that it frees you from carrying one, it's hard to see the benefit over a typical smartphone. It's also not stated exactly how the features worked, and you'd be right to be skeptical about any fancy tech demo.

By presenting it at Paris Fashion Week, Humane seems eager to flaunt the device's stylish nature (it seems to be available in both black and white), though that's up for debate. It's hard to compare to anything else, as there are few wearables out there that attach to clothing. The company will also have to reckon with the stigma (à la Google Glass) of wearing a camera, though the mini-projector is actually pretty cool. In any case, we'll learn more when it's fully unveiled next month on November 9.

The AI Pin from Humane, a much-hyped startup founded by former Apple employees, will cost $699. The Verge obtained documents about the device ahead of its official launch on November 9, and that price has now been confirmed.

In addition, the Pin will have a monthly $24 subscription fee for access to T-Mobile’s cellular network and large language models from OpenAI and Microsoft to power its smarts. The AI Pin is a device that’s about the size of a large business card that clips on to your clothing magnetically and acts as a personalized assistant controlled via voice and touch. Notably, it doesn’t have a screen. Instead, it projects a barebones user interface onto the palm of your hand.

We now have more details about the Pin and confirmation of The Verge’s leak, which you can read about here.

Update November 9 1PM ET: This article was modified after publishing with Humane's confirmation of the leaked details.

Wearable startup Humane AI has been dripping details about its upcoming device, the AI Pin, for months now. We firs saw it at a TED Talk in May and, more recently, got a glimpse of its promised capabilities at Paris Fashion Week, ahead of Thursday's official unveiling. However many questions regarding how the wearable AI will actually do what it says it will remain to be answered.

Here's what we do know: Humane is a much-hyped startup founded by former Apple employees. Its first product is the Humane AI Pin, a pocket-worn wearable AI assistant that can reportedly perform the tasks that many modern cellphones and digital assistants do, but in a radically different form factor. It has no screen, instead reportedly operating primarily through voice commands and occasionally through a virtual screen projected onto the user's hand. It costs $700 plus another $24 because Humane insisted on launching its own MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) on top of T-Mobile's network. That $24/month "Humane Subscription" includes a dedicated cell phone number for the Pin with unlimited talk, text and data, rather than allow the device to tether to your existing phone.

The device itself will be available in three colors — Eclipse, Equinox, and Lunar — when orders begin shipping in early 2024. The magnetic clip that affixes the device to your clothing doubles as the battery storage and includes a pair of backup batteries for users to keep with them. The AI Pin also sports an ultra-wide RGB camera, depth and motion sensors, all of which allow "the device to see the world as you see it," per the company's release.

The AI Pin will reportedly run on a Snapdragon processor with a dedicated Qualcomm AI Engine supporting its custom Cosmos OS. Its "entirely new AI software framework, the Ai Bus," reportedly removes the need to actually download content to the device itself. Instead, it "quickly understands what you need, connecting you to the right AI experience or service instantly." Collaborations with both Microsoft and OpenAI will reportedly give the AI Pin, "access to some of the world’s most powerful AI models and platforms."

There is still much we don't know about the AI Pin, however, like how long each battery module lasts and how sensitive the system's anti-tamper system is that will lock down a "compromised" device. Live demonstrations of the technology have been rare to date and hands-on opportunities nearly nonexistent. Humane is hosting a debut event Thursday afternoon where, presumably, functional iterations of the AI Pin will be on display.

Wearable startup Humane AI laid off four percent of its employees before it has started shipping its Ai Pin, The Verge has reported. Leadership reportedly told employees that budgets would be lowered in 2024, according to sources familiar with the matter. The cuts were implemented earlier this week and affect around 10 people.

On LinkedIn, CEO and co-founder Bethany Bongiorno called the cuts “part of a wider refresh of our organizational structure as our company evolves with purpose for this next phase of growth.” She added that CTO Patrick Gates will be transitioning to an advisor role, and that Humane AI had promoted new heads of hardware, software and others as part of a reorganization. Bongiorno told The Verge that the cuts were “not communicated as a layoff,” though sources told that outlet that they were, both verbally and in writing.

Humane was founded by ex-Apple executives Bongiorno and her husband Imran Chaudhri. It’s primary product is the “Ai Pin” that acts as a sort of wearable AI assistant. The company first unveiled the device at a Paris fashion show and announced last month that it would start shipping in March for $699.

The pin takes voice commands from the user and beams relevant information onto the user’s hand via a built-in projector. It can also perform AI-powered optical recognition via a camera. It’s powered by a quad-core Snapdragon processor with a dedicated Qualcomm AI Engine using Cosmos OS software. The founders have said that it “quickly understands what you need, connecting you to the right AI experience or service instantly.”

The Ai Pin has yet to be thoroughly reviewed (other than a few short tests), but the company demonstrated how it works in a video released last month. The founders showed how you can give it specific commands like “play music written by Prince, but not performed by Prince.” The device can then display the information on your hand via the projector and control music playback and more by tilting or closing your hand.

It can also answer questions by searching the web and send messages with modifiers like “add more excitement.” You can use it to monitor your health and nutrition, and Humane provides a central hub for images, etc., along with accessories like clips, battery cases and more. How well it performs its AI tasks in the real world, though, remains to be seen.
